How long your device stays plugged in comes down to two numbers: capacity and charging current. Fast charging at 2 A halves the time compared with a 1 A port.

A 15% surcharge is included: the last few percent charge more slowly on every cell. Don't charge overnight or below 10 °C, and your battery will hold its capacity for longer.

Battery safety: what continuous current does your setup need?

For devices with replaceable battery cells only. The calculator tells you how much current your settings draw and whether the cell is allowed to deliver that on a continuous basis.

Headroom over the cell

Not enough headroom. A cell should be rated at least 2 A above the calculated current – otherwise it gets hot, ages quickly and, in the worst case, becomes dangerous. Lower the power or use a higher resistance.

A note on our range: every e-cigarette at smokepope has a built-in battery and manages this current itself. This calculator is for battery mods using 18650 or 21700 cells that you use elsewhere. Damaged coils or wraps must be replaced, never repaired with tape.

Tell us how you vape

One sentence is enough: where you're starting from, how you want the draw, what you're willing to spend. The more specific, the better – "no button" and "needs to last all day" matter more for the selection than any brand name.

Popy checks the catalogue

Every device is scored against your requirements: draw style first, then system, battery, handling and price. A device that can't deliver your draw style is ruled out – even if it would otherwise be a great fit.

You get a setup, not just a product

Device, matching pod, resistance and wattage belong together. The starter set puts both in the cart as a pair; for e-liquid, Popy hands you over to the liquid mixer, who finds the flavour and strength to suit your device.

Basics

MTL, RDL or DL – the three vape styles

The vape style is the first and most important decision. It determines resistance, power, nicotine strength and liquid base all at once. Clicking "Ask Popy" puts the question into the input field.

The tight draw

MTL – mouth to lung

The draw switchers already know: draw into your mouth first, then inhale. Tight, firm, little vapour, little noise. Resistance from around 0.8 ohms, power usually 8 to 22 watts, 50/50 base, higher nicotine – often nicotine salt between 10 and 20 mg/ml. Uses the least liquid and is gentle on the battery.

In between

RDL – restricted direct lung

Straight into the lungs, but restricted. More vapour and flavour than MTL, without the open draw of a sub-ohm device. Resistance between roughly 0.5 and 0.8 ohms, 12 to 35 watts, 50/50 or 70/30 base, medium nicotine – 6 to 12 mg/ml. The usual next step once MTL feels too tight over time.

Open

DL – direct lung

Open like sipping through a straw: plenty of air, plenty of vapour, plenty of flavour. Resistance below 0.5 ohms, 40 watts and above, 70/30 base, low nicotine – 0 to 3 mg/ml, otherwise it gets harsh on the throat. Uses noticeably more liquid and battery; it's the wrong direction to start in.

Refillable

Open pod system

You fill in your own liquid and only swap the pod or coil when the flavour fades. The widest choice of flavours, the lowest running costs, one extra step. This is the format smokepope carries – with a built-in battery and USB-C.

Pre-filled

Closed pod system

Click in the pod and you're done. No refilling, no spills while filling – but a fixed flavour range and a higher cost per millilitre. Worth it if you want maximum simplicity, or as a second device for on the go.

For experienced vapers

Battery mod with replaceable cells

Box mod with an 18650 or 21700 cell and a separate tank. Maximum power and runtime, but you're responsible for the cell, the charger and the resistance. Not currently stocked – if you vape this way, you'll find coils for common tanks here, plus the safety calculator.

Three numbers on the pod decide flavour, vapour production and lifespan.

Ohm

Resistance determines the draw

The lower the resistance, the more current flows, the hotter the coil gets and the more vapour is produced. 1.2 ohms is a tight MTL draw, 0.6 ohms sits in between, 0.3 ohms is an open lung draw. The same pod is often available in several resistances – same format, two completely different vaping experiences.

Material

Mesh, Kanthal or stainless steel

Mesh is a网-like weave rather than a wire: more surface area, faster heating, denser flavour, longer lifespan – today's standard. Kanthal wire still turns up in older heads, stainless steel allows temperature control. For your buying decision, the main point is: mesh where available.

Watt

The wattage window is not a suggestion

Every pod has a range printed on it, say 12–25 W. Below it the cotton can't keep up and the pod gurgles; above it the cotton burns and it tastes burnt. The sweet spot is usually in the middle. Leave new pods to stand for five minutes before the first puff so the cotton soaks through fully.

Five habits that do more than any accessory.

Charging

Don't run it empty, don't leave it on charge

Lithium cells like the range between 20 and 80 per cent. Anyone who fully drains it daily and charges overnight loses noticeable capacity within a few months. A second device or a top-up in the afternoon is gentler on the battery than any charging technique.

Cleaning

Keep the contacts and port dry

The most common reason for "it won't turn on" is liquid on the contacts or fluff in the USB port. Wipe the contacts with a dry cloth, blow out the port, store the device upright. When filling, go only up to the marker – the rest ends up in the airflow channel.

Transport

Temperature and pressure

Don't leave it in the car in summer, and keep it in an inside pocket in winter: cold noticeably shortens runtime, heat shortens lifespan. Empty the tank before a flight – the pressure difference pushes liquid through the airflow channel. Devices belong in hand luggage, never in the hold.

Frequently asked questions about the Vape Advisor

When switching over, an open pod system with an MTL draw, draw-activated firing and a resistance of 0.8 ohm or higher is almost always the right fit. It feels like the draw you're used to, needs no button and uses very little e-liquid. Three things matter more than the brand: the style of draw, battery capacity for your day, and whether you can buy replacement pods. Popy asks about exactly these and gives you the device, pod and resistance together.
That's the electrical resistance of the coil. From around 0.8 ohm upwards the pod sits in tight MTL territory at 8 to 22 watts; between 0.5 and 0.8 ohm it's a restricted direct-lung draw at 12 to 35 watts; below that it's an open direct-lung draw at 20 watts and above. The same pod is often available in several resistances – same shape, different vaping experience. The ohm calculator on this page works out the voltage, current and typical wattage window for you.
Every pod and every coil has a wattage range printed on it, for example 12 to 25 watts. Stick to that range: below it the wick can't soak up liquid fast enough and the vape gurgles; above it the wick burns and the flavour turns crispy. The sweet spot is usually in the middle of the window. The starter kit already lists the right wattage, and the calculator warns you if a value falls outside the window.
Pods and coils are tied to a device series, not to a brand: an Xlim pod fits every Xlim device, but not a NeXlim. The "Which pod fits which device" table on this page lists each series with its devices, the matching pods and the available resistances. Just ask Popy with the name of your device and you'll get the matching spares with price and availability.
Seven to fourteen days is typical, depending on the e-liquid and the power setting. Heavily sweetened e-liquids with sucralose gunk up the coil faster, and so do higher wattages. You'll notice it in the flavour before it becomes unpleasant: first muted, then slightly crispy. The coil calculator on this page shows you what that costs per month, and you can download a calendar reminder for the swap.
It depends on the draw: open sub-ohm devices are usually vaped at 0 to 3 mg/ml, MTL devices mostly at 6 to 12 mg/ml, and small pods often with nicotine salt between 10 and 20 mg/ml. In the EU, 20 mg/ml is the legal maximum. Popy goes with the strength you mention and never suggests a higher one on its own – when in doubt, go lower.
Usually the wick is dry or overheated. Turn the power down a notch, leave a freshly filled pod to stand for five minutes and take a few draws without firing so the wick soaks through. If the flavour stays crispy, the coil is spent and the pod needs replacing. Describe the problem to Popy in the chat and you'll get the cause, a fix and – if needed – the right replacement.
