Harm Reduction & Culture

The 5 golden rules for enjoying mad honey safely

Traditional knowledge of the Gurung honey hunters combined with modern scientific risk reduction.

1. Start low, go slow

Always begin with half a teaspoon tip (approx. 2-3 g). The grayanotoxin concentration varies naturally from harvest to harvest and with the flowering stage of the rhododendron.

2. Never combine with alcohol

Alcohol amplifies the blood vessel–widening effect of grayanotoxin unpredictably and can lead to a sharp drop in blood pressure and nausea.

3. A safe, calm setting

Take mad honey at home or in a sheltered, relaxed place. Never take it before driving, heavy physical work or while out in traffic.

4. Not on an empty stomach

A light meal before taking it gently slows absorption and prevents irritation of the stomach lining.

Know-how & FAQ

Frequently asked questions about mad honey (Deli Bal)

Everything worth knowing about legality, ingredients, taste and physiological effects.

Mad Honey (known as “Deli Bal” in Turkey and “Pagal Maha” in Nepal) is gathered by giant honey bees (Apis laboriosa) from the nectar of wild rhododendron species (Rhododendron luteum and ponticum). The flowers contain naturally occurring grayanotoxins, which bind to the sodium channels in cell membranes and lead to deep relaxation, mild euphoria and vasodilation.
Yes, 100% legal. Genuine raw honey is a natural product and is not subject to any controlled-substance classification. Our honey is imported legally, laboratory-tested and sold as an authentic natural and traditional product.
Mad Honey tastes pleasantly sweet at first, with caramel notes and a bold, slightly bitter finish. After a few seconds, a characteristic gentle burning or tingling sensation appears at the back of the throat — a sign to connoisseurs that active plant compounds are present.
In cases of clear overdose (more than 2 tablespoons), dizziness, a drop in blood pressure, a slowed pulse (bradycardie), nausea and heavy sweating can occur. In such situations drink plenty of water, lie down flat with your legs raised, and seek medical help if symptoms persist. Be sure to stick to the calculator’s recommendation!
